Opinion | Israel Is More Fortress Than Home Right Now

Again and again, we Israelis tell ourselves what has become part of the formative story of our identity and our destiny. How for several hours Hamas terrorists invaded the homes of Israelis, murdered some 1,200 people, raped and kidnapped, looted and burned. I have talked with Jewish people living outside of Israel who have said that their physical — and spiritual — existence felt vulnerable during those hours. Some were even surprised by the magnitude to which they needed Israel to exist both as an idea and as a concrete fact. “Uninvolved,” as Israel calls them in conflictese, the language with which nations at war deceive themselves so as not to face the repercussions of their acts.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Thousands of Israeli academics and artists have urged U.S. President Joe Biden and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to shun Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to the United States next week, underlining the divide between Israel's far-right government and segments of the country's population. Netanyahu’s public itinerary so far does not feature an appointment with Biden at the White House. Proponents of the plan say the country’s unelected judiciary, led by the Supreme Court, wields too much power. Biden expressed concerns when Israel's parliament slammed through the first piece of legislation in July, calling the outcome “unfortunate.” On Tuesday, Israel's Supreme Court opened the first case to look at the legality of Netanyahu’s deeply contentious plans. The country’s academics, artists, business leaders and even military reservists have come out against the overhaul.

The lawsuit says Kennedy's screenplay and "Stranger Things" have several similarities in their characters, plot, dialogue and themes. Kennedy accused an artist who developed concept art for both his project and "Stranger Things" of sharing his work with the Duffer Brothers. Netflix and the makers of "Stranger Things" denied the allegations in court filings and said the stories are "objectively different" by "virtually every imaginable measure." "Most glaringly, Stranger Things features a core group of children who fight off evil monsters while navigating teenage social issues," the defendants said. The case is Irish Rover Entertainment LLC v. Sims, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, No.
